I should have been asleep. It was from a young man. A semi-professional footballer in tier six of Scottish football. I realised quickly he was in a very dark place — and that I was the first person he had reached out to. Through DMs, he began to tell me his story.

Fortunately, I am now at peace with myself and more importantly I have found an amazing community that I want to stand up for and be an active ally for. Although my experience was difficult, I am proud to be visible and I am excited to work with Stonewall to be involved in making sports a place for all.
Zander Murray: First openly gay male Scottish footballer to retire
Since retiring from football, he has become a highly sought-after and award-winning public speaker, delivering talks on making sport more inclusive. Zander has won several awards since coming out, including most recently Alumni of the year at Edinburgh Napier University. In he was named one of the LGBTQ trailblazers changing the world by Attitude Magazine, and the football shirt in which he scored his th goal was placed in the Scottish Football Museum.
